Nikki on the Line edition by Barbara Carroll Roberts Children eBooks Reviews

  • Nikki is a star basketball player who successfully makes the elite club team. She soon learns she's in over her head, as she's never faced such stiff competition before, or seen so many tall girls. She's playing out of position and a poor performance has her questioning whether she belongs. On top of that, there is friend drama, her grades are slipping, and her mom might not let her continue playing.

Nikki must learn to reinvent herself and rediscover her love for the game of basketball. This book is action-packed and heartfelt, and a great addition to anyone's middle grade library.
  • All the thrills of a basketball game, the gripping bond between teammates, and a protagonist worthy of the big leagues. Barbara Carroll Roberts brings it all to the court in her extraordinary debut. This book will make your heart pump, then fill it with all the warmth you'd expect from a Gary Schmidt novel. At turns funny and moving, NIKKI is not to be missed. Roberts promises to be an elite-level player in middle grade.
  • I read all kinds of sports books growing up, all of which were about boys. I am so happy to finally see a book out about young female athletes. "Nikki on the Line" is engaging, entertaining, and full of action - an all around great read!
  • Nikki dreams about becoming a basketball star. When she makes a competitive basketball team with her best friend, she has high hopes for the upcoming season. But there are a lot of challenges Nikki has to face. First of all, financing the cost of Nikki playing on the competitive team is a big burden for her single mother. In order to make her dream a reality, Nikki volunteers to babysit her brother after school so that they no longer have to pay for daycare for him. Because she is busy every day after school with her brother, Nikki can't hang out with her best friend and another girl from her new basketball team. There's a school assignment that is causing her stress, the mean remarks she overhead another player's dad make about her, and her floundering grades that have Nikki struggling to keep it all together.

I loved this book. I loved Nikki's passion for basketball, her friendships with teammates and watching the friendship develop between her and the new boy in her class. Even though Nikki's mom frustrated me from time to time- her lack of ability to really listen to her daughter and her preoccupation with her job, I still felt like she did really care about her daughter.

I'm so excited to share this book with middle grade readers. Nikki On The Line will certainly appeal to basketball lovers, but this is a story for everyone, not just sports fans.
  • Nikki on the Line is a great story and and engaging read! I sat down to skim it and ended up thoroughly engrossed in this tale of a girl seeking her spot on an elite club basketball team รข€” and finding her place in life as a teen. Funny, poignant and believable, this book will appeal to so many readers, young and old. Top marks for a stunning debut novel! I can't wait to read more of Barbara Carroll Roberts' books when they come out.
  • My girls and I were on the edge of our seats to see how Nikki resolved the various challenges in her life. The main story line may be what it takes to excel in basketball when you're 'short', but there's plenty in Nikki on the Line for anyone feeling different or on the outside.
  • I love the fact that Barbara Carroll Roberts wrote a book about girls basketball that has lots of great action scenes. So many girls and women play and love basketball and there has been nothing to read. On top of that it's just a great story! The characters are a diverse and believable cast. The kids are kids and the parents are parents with all our warts!
